A gutter edge is a long piece of thin folded metal, and reaching into one is how most people cut a forearm on a Saturday. That is the job these are for.
HPPE is high performance polyethylene, a fibre with a very high strength for its weight. Knitted into a sleeve it resists a blade drawn across it far better than cotton, and it does that while staying light enough to wear in warm weather.
Level 5 is a cut resistance rating and it is worth being exact about what it covers. It describes resistance to a blade drawn across the fabric. It is not puncture protection, so it will not stop a nail, a screw or a bracket point.
What makes these different from cheaper cut resistant sleeves is what is not in them. Fibreglass and steel wire are the usual way to add cut resistance, and both are itchy enough that the sleeve comes off after twenty minutes. A sleeve in a drawer protects nobody.
They also do the ordinary job of a sleeve: abrasion on brick, scratches from brambles, and sun on a forearm for a whole afternoon.
