Gutter work is hard on hands in two different ways, and a glove has to answer both. There is abrasion from brick, tile and bracket, and there is puncture from screw points, roofing nails and the cut edge of the gutter itself.
Leather answers both because it is thick and it does not tear along a thread the way a knitted glove does. Grain cowhide, which is the outer layer of the hide, is the tougher and more expensive half of a skin.
The palm carries a second patch of split cowhide. That is not decoration: the heel of the palm is where a work glove fails, and doubling it is what makes the difference between one season and three.
Leather also breathes. A coated or rubberised glove keeps sweat in and comes off after an hour, which is the same reason a cut resistant sleeve has to be comfortable to be worth owning.
